These programs can also create popups on your computer based on phrases you search for on major search engines. I happen to be a person who is fairly open to companies knowing things about me so they can show me information I'm interested in. But this spyware stuff goes a little too far, in my opinion. First, I hate, hate, hate popup windows. Gator, creates popup windows based on what you are searching for in Google. That annoys me as well because they are ultimately trying to steal ad money away from Google. Oveture uses Gator as one of their partners. It's just sneaky and rude. Second, these programs function behind the scenes and try to hide themselves as much as possible. They make a point of not being overly conspicuous. That goes against today's opt-in belief system. I consider myself a pretty savvy computer user. But I ran a program to detect spyware files and registry entries. I was pretty shocked when it turned up 121 entries. The program I used was "Spybot Search and Destroy". It was very intuitive. I didn't need to read any directions to figure out how to use it. And it took care of all the files I wanted to be removed from my computer. Pretty impressive! Oh... it's free too. I found a link to it on PCWorld. But you can do a search for it and find it many other places, if you would like. Here's the link I used: PCWorld.com - Spybot Search and Destroy v1.2|W|P|105966025732881112|W|P|Spybot Search and Destroy - You might be surprised what's on your computer.|W|P|sagerock@gmail.com7/31/2003 07:16:00 AM|W|P|Sage|W|P|Overture sees Web search prices up, more deals The average click charge at Overture is now $0.40. Well, that's changed. Now you have to pick a category. However, the Open Government Information Awareness site puts some pretty powerful strength into the common man's hand. The basic principle for the site is to allow people to closely follow the lives of politicians. Additionally, anyone will be able to anonymously add information to each politician's file. This is going to be interesting because there will be no moderation as to what information is posted. If you know something about a politician you will be able to freely post it to the site. It's probably going to get really personal and probably ugly. But ever since the Pentagon's "Terrorism Information Awareness" site, that allows the government to track any individual who potentially could be a terrorist threat, it's kind of nice to know that we now have the power to turn the tables a bit.|W|P|105759825812070016|W|P||W|P|sagerock@gmail.com7/03/2003 12:26:00 PM|W|P|Sage|W|P|oreilly.com -- Online Catalog: Google Pocket Guide Crafted from our bestselling Google Hacks title, the Google Pocket Guide provides exactly the information you need to make your searches faster and more effective, right from the start.|W|P|105725320221231105|W|P||W|P|sagerock@gmail.com7/03/2003 09:51:00 AM|W|P|Sage|W|P|Here's some interesting, fun searching for you.
